Reading is one of the most important skills that a child has to master. There is not one straightforward approach to teaching a child to read. Phonics is a method of teaching reading that is based on sounds spelling patterns. Children are taught how to ‘sound out’ new words by learning the letter sounds (consonants and vowels) blending (blends, diagraphs and world families) as well as identifying sounds in words.
The Smart Phonics series comprises three sets of two books. They are written in a systematic way to introduce children to the different letter sounds and blending. Children are first introduced to little sounds. This is then followed by a variety of skill sheets for them to practice. Each book builds on the skills of previous books, so children can gain confidence and finally read and write fluently.
In Smart Phonics Books 1A and 1B, children are introduced to short and long vowel sounds, ‘a’, ’e’, ’i’, ‘o’ and ‘u’.
In Smart Phonics Books 2A and 2B, children are introduced to initial and final consonant sounds.
In Smart Phonics Books 3A and 3B, children are introduced to common blends, diagraphs and world families. They are then encouraged to make use of the skills learnt in the previous books to bend the sounds together to decode words.
Developing your child’s skill in reading fluently does not stop here. Provide your child with a lot of print materials to cultivate an interest in reading. Make reading a fun family activity. With practice, your child will be able to read independently.
